Atheism, religion or not?

Okay so recently some random kid came up to me on Wednesday asking me to sign
a petition form because he wanted to start an Atheism club.

Personally I find Atheism to contradict itself and only as a form for people to label themselves as something because in all reality they can't function without belonging
to a group. My friends and I had a discussion about it, I said that Athiest
believe in not believing, thus they still believe in something which is
against being "Athiest".

"Atheism is a reflection
of certainty, I am not certain"
-Bill Mayher, co-director of Religulous and Borat

Now let's move on to my bigger
problem, should an Atheist club be allowed? On your myspace doesn't
it say that Atheism is a religion? Maybe I'm wrong but I thought
you couldn't say anything religious in school. And what the hell
would you do in an Atheist club? Pick on people who find it
spiritually fulfilling to believe in a higher power?

I have to agree with you. Atheist believe they are not religious, but the only thing that makes them different from what they call religion is that they do not believe in a higher power. As far as allowing an Atheism club i can't say it shouldn't be allowed but i would definitely question whether it goes against the school's policies.

I've found your analysis on Atheism great. I've watched Bill's documentary too, and I find that Atheism is a statement not a physical entity. An atheism club should be allowed, as religion clubs already exist in CBHS. So to be 'fair,' CBHS should allow the club to exist. But to be honest, I also feel it is alright to form an atheist club, because people have the right to discuss their own opinions within a group of themselves. I agree that people still will try to find a higher purpose in any shape or form. If not religion, then secret societies like the Freemasons, and if not that then outspoken bloggers (:P).

I definitely had the same thing happen to me! This kid in my third hour asked me to sign that sheet, but I honestly thought that it was ridiculous. (But this was a few weeks ago.) I think of the word Atheist merely as a label...not a religion. Those who call themselves an Atheist say that they don't believe in anything. But then when one says that he/she is an Atheist, it is often met with a surprised "oh! You're an Atheist? I didn't know that!" - or that is just from what I have experienced. So, I refrain from labeling myself as an Atheist because it seems to me that people think of it as a different meaning. I just don't have a religion that I follow. Period. I guess you can say that I believe in myself, and what I think is right.

I don't know what good an Atheist club would do, honestly. It is very ironic to me. i have nothing against Atheism, it just bothers me when people think of Atheism as a religion.

This is so true! I completely agree, Atheism is simply a label used when people don't have another religion that they can qualify for. I don't think it should be considered a religion. "Religion-a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects." What beliefs do they have? Practices? The only practice they have is to not practice anything. I don't really see why it shouldn't be allowed in school, but I just don't see what they could possibly do in a club. Discuss beliefs? I don't get it. But I mean I don't have anything against it.
